Eyebrows are a crucial, often overlooked element of the face. But, they can add just the right amount of drama to any face and really put together a look. I know for me it was challenging to attempt the fill in my eyebrows. What do I use? What color? There’s stencils?! I was overwhelmed, but with the help of a good friend, Tania, I was able to figure out the dos and don’ts of eyebrows. She swears by powder for filling in eyebrows, but I’m not to sure. When it comes to other people’s brows, I’m a pro, but when it comes to myself, I am more picky. Aspiring makeup artists should know the pros and cons of pencil and powder. So I went ahead a purchased both a pencil and powder and decided to have a face off.
Pencil (Left)
I went for the E.L.F. Brow Pencil. The color was good a little on the dark side and harsh and I couldn’t get it to fade out naturally after the arch. It has a waxy texture so it keeps the brow hairs in place and stays put for a long time (maybe too long).
Pro: Easier to carry around, Cheaper
Con: Must sharpen before every use for preciseness.
Powder (Right)
For powder I chose Anastasia in Dark Brown. It is a duo compact with 2 brown shades, which is useful since my hair changes color every month. I used a small flat brush to fill in as to ensure a nice shape. The color was more subtle, so it was easier to shape brow because I knew where I wanted to concentrate color.
Pros: Two colors so I could tweak shade, and using a brush makes me in control of where I want definition.
Cons: Must carry around with brush, and requires more touch ups.
Honestly, it is very hard to choose. I would use the pencil for a night out of dancing that I know I won’t be able to touch up as often. For everyday usage, though, my vote is for the more subtle powder.
